Artist's Biography: Singer, Curt, Czech Republic, 1905-1989Curt Singer, Painter, born in Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) 1905, Czechoslovakia. In 1922 he graduated from high school in Hamburg. Between 1924 and 1926 Singer studied philosophy, economics and art history at the University of Hamburg, and during that time he was already working as a painter. In 1930 Singer began studying art at the Berlin School of Art, and in 1932, after graduating, he began teaching craft and painting at Hamburg High School. In 1935, after the Nazis rise to power, Singer immigrated to Eretz Israel (then Mandatory Palestine) and became a member of Kibbutz Heftziba. During this time Singer devoted himself to farming (he worked in the vineyard), and almost abandoned art. Only in winter, when it was not possible to go to work in the vineyard due to the rain, he continued to paint in his hut on the kibbutz. Singer lived with his wife and daughter on the kibbutz until in 1943 when he decided to leave the kibbutz and move to Jerusalem. In the first years in Jerusalem, he worked in various works, and painted before and after his work. Some said that at that time he used to create oil paintings on paper because he could not afford the purchase of expensive fabrics for painting. Singer used to travel with his family in Jerusalem even before the outbreak of the War of Independence in 1948. During his travels he often came to the mountains above the neighborhood of Ein Karem, from where he overlooked the houses of the settlement down the slope. In 1955 he managed to find a vacant house for rent in Ein Karem and moved with his family to live in the house, when during the first year they lived without electricity and running water. Singer was one of the founders of the Artists' House in Jerusalem and served as treasurer of the house during his early years. In 1957 he returned to painting in full. Many of his landscapes, flowers and thorns were painted in Ein Karem. In 1982, Singer moved with his wife to live next to his daughter in Kibbutz Nir Oz. He passed away in 1989. His WorkCurt Singer had observation and drawing abilities that allowed him to perceive with sharp eyes human situations and impressions from nature spontaneously and with extreme ease. Singer's examining gaze responds honestly to the sights revealed in his face, and he skillfully transfers them to his papers and fabrics. Singer's painting themes were based on impressions of the country landscape, which emphasized the personal connection he developed to the unique atmosphere of the country and its landscapes. He did a lot to paint the residents of the country during their daily lives, giving representation to all the different ethnicities, religions and shades that make up the Israeli mosaic. Singer painted his paintings with great sensitivity and modesty, while bringing life and dynamism to his paintings. The color palette that Singer used is bright and light, which adds a lot of light and atmosphere to his paintings. Singer's vision is optimistic, idyllic and softened. Perhaps evidence that comes from a real love he felt for the city of Jerusalem, where he lived and created for many years.Studies Hamburg, Berlin and France.Solo Exhibitions 1932 Hamburg, Germany 1943 Oil paintings, Schlosser Art Gallery, Jerusalem 1954 The Artists’ House, Jerusalem 1955 Oil paintings, watercolors and drawings, Nora Gallery, Jerusalem 1957 Nora Gallery, Jerusalem 1962 29 watercolors and gouache paintings, Nora Gallery, Jerusalem 1966 Nora Gallery, Jerusalem 1968 Oil paintings, Artists’ House, Jerusalem 1990 Gouache paintings, David Gallery, Jerusalem 2002 Retrospective, The White House in Khirbet Ma'ayan, Kibbutz Nir Oz Art Gallery 2004 Curt Singer – Paintings, Aharon Chelouche House, Neve Tzedek, Tel Aviv.
