He was trained at Carnegie Tech in Pittsburgh, training under Arthur Watson Sparks. Later he trained under noted instructor Charles Webster Hawthorne. Shulgold's art was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; he always maintained his connections to the Pittsburgh area, even after moving away.
