He attended the Munich School of Applied Arts, and then from 1891 attended the Badische Kunstgewerbeschule in Karlsruhe. From 1894 he studied at the Badische Kunstakademie in Karlsruhe, where he was a student of Ernst Schurth and Caspar Ritter.
