The work is both signed and dated 1883 to the lower left corner. The painting depicts a brooding landscape and encompassing skies with two friends or sisters digesting news from a letter one of them reads perhaps a love letter or news from afar. It is a very fine work and an excellent example of why the artists work fetches the sums it does. Edward John Cobbett, R.B.A. was born in 1815 in London and died 1899. Cobbett as a British artist, painted genre scenes and landscapes. He was a member of the Society of British Artists in London after 1856. From 1833 to 1880 he exhibited a large number of works notably at Suffolk Street as well as at the Royal Academy and the British Institute in London.
