This is a unique hand-painted Oil-Varnished Shakyamuni/Siddhartha Gautama Buddha Tibetan Thangka painting, a visual representation of the revered root teacher of all Buddhist lineages, Shakyamuni, or Siddhartha Gautama Buddha, the Buddha of our time. In Buddhism, the term 'Buddha' holds profound meaning. It signifies 'one who woke up,' referring to any enlightened individual and representing the principle of Buddha-nature. However, the historical Buddha, Shakyamuni Buddha, is the most well-known figure associated with this title. In Mahayana Buddhism, Shakyamuni refers explicitly to the historical figure Siddhartha Gautama, who became known as Shakyamuni after his enlightenment. Sometimes called Gautama Buddha, this transcendent figure is considered to exist beyond just the historical narrative. Siddhartha Gautama, later known as Shakyamuni Buddha, was born in Nepal around the 5th or 6th century BCE. His life, although historically supported, is shrouded in legend. As the son of a king, Siddhartha lived a protected existence, shielded from the difficult truths of illness, aging, and mortality. It was only in his late 20s, when he was confronted with these inevitable truths, that he renounced his royal life to embark on a quest for inner peace. After many trials, Siddhartha, around 35, achieved enlightenment through deep meditation under the Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India. Known after that as the Buddha, meaning "one who woke up," he spent his remaining years teaching until his death at about 80 when he achieved Nirvana. The name Shakyamuni, meaning 'Sage of the Shakya' in Sanskrit, holds a significant place in the life of Siddhartha Gautama. He was born into the Shakya dynasty, a group that established a city-state in Kapilavastu, modern-day Nepal. The Shakya were believed to be descendants of the ancient Vedic sage Gautama Maharishi. Historical documentation outside Buddhist texts further supports the existence and importance of the Shakya clan in the context of Siddhartha's life.
