Philippe Noyer was born in 1917 in Lyon in central France. He began his studies at the Ecole des Roches, and then enrolled in the Beaux Arts School of Lyon, before going to Paris to study at the Paul Colin School of Art. He started his painting career in 1943. He met the famous Paris art dealer, Emmanuel David, who put Noyer on contract with the prestigious Drouant-David Gallery of Paris. Noyer soon became one of the most sought after portraitists of high society Paris and London. Noyer was commissioned to paint the portraits of many personalities including Elizabeth Taylor, Dinah Shore, Jean Wallace and the children of actor Alan Ladd and producer Alan Lerner. As his art developed, he eventually began to devote himself entirely to his favorite subjects - the delicate, sophisticated, slim, long-limbed ladies that appeared in many of his works. Noyer worked for thirteen years perfecting his technique, which gives his paintings their distinctive transparency and light. The technique finally perfected in 1956 eliminated the use of white in favor of pure colors. His oil paintings and watercolors are in museum and private collections around the world. A nice touch is the subtle texture the watercolor leaves on the paper, adding depth to the image.
