About this work: An original 18th century painting of a French/Italian slapstick theater performance, known as commedia dell’arte. This work depicts a group of actors in costume in an outdoor setting. Easily identifiable are the characters “Pierrot” and “Harlequin” at the right side of the composition. Scenes like this were immortalized by 18th century painters such as Antoine Watteau (in his work “The Italian Comedians”). The work is oil on canvas and is housed in an antique gilt wood and gesso frame.
