ARTIST: Axel Hansen is a well-listed Danish artist, who studied at the Royal Art Academy and had his some of his works exhibited at Charlottenburg. His favorite motifs are rural and coastal sceneries from the island of Bornholm. His short life ended on Melsted beach, Bornholm, where he was found dead next to his easel. PAINTING: Oil on canvas. The painting is a vivid rendering of 3 individuals emptying the nets and collecting today’s catch. Underneath the signature, the location of the painting. “Gudhjem”, is given. Gudhjem (literally: “God’s home”) is a small fishing town located in the north-eastern corner of the Danish island of Bornholm. Bornholm is famous for a dish called “Sol over Gudhjem”(Sun above Gudhjem) which is smoked herring with raw egg and chives. I’ll date the painting to somewhere between 1920-1936. Signed: ”Axel Hansen” in the lower right corner. SIZE: With frame: 70 cm/27.6" * 53 cm/20.9". Without frame: 57 cm/22.4" * 40 cm/15.7". CONDITION: The painting is in great ready-to-hang condition - no holes, tears or missing paint. The frame has scratches and stains.
