Oil on Canvas Landscape by listed German artist Willi Hans Schwartz

Willi Hans Schwartz from Germany was active in the late 19c and early 20th century. His work spanned romantic, atmospheric landscapes to paintings of the snowbound Alps in winter. This well composed depiction is of a thatched cottage set beside a small pond or river. There is a wonderful feeling of depth highlighted by the figure walking down the lane away from the viewer’s eye. The artist’s skilled brushwork is evident by the precise detailing of the trees, the sky and water reflections. The foreground is dominated by the large trees painted in earth tones. The large blue sky with patchy clouds serves to contrast and further define the composition. It is optimistic-blue skies do lie ahead. The work measures 24” by 36” and 29” by 41” in the gilt solid wood, cove frame. The canvas, which has been relined, shows craquelure descending over the top left portion of the canvas. There is vertical abrasion on the right margin on the sky which has been in painted. The frame shows small nicks consistent with age. The work is in generally very good and stable condition. The artist's signature can be found on the lower right corner. This lovely painting will make a handsome addition to your home or office.
