Born in Brooklyn, New York, Laurent studied at Syracuse University as well as in Paris in 1948-49 at the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere before receiving his masters at Indiana University in 1954. Laurent had many ties to Maine, as his father, sculptor Robert Laurent, ran the Ogunquit School of Painting and Scultpure in Perkins Cove in the 1940s and 50s.
