Naive American portrait miniature of gent, c. early 19th C. Set in original brass frame with elaborately engraved back: small aperture would have contained a lock of hair or ribbon. Provenance: by family descent. Accompanied by a medal on which is inscribed, “ADJUDGED BY THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE AS A REWARD OF MERIT TO B.V. Stevenson, 1829.” Original seller indicated that the medal is from Franklin County, and that the sitter probably lived on William Street in Hardwick, Mass., near Worcester, Mass.
