Vintage George Post Watercolor Painting Description and Item Information Up for sale is this unframed, vintage watercolor painting on paper by George Booth Post. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This dramatic painting depicts, in an exaggerated, modernist style a coastal landscape. Atop steep cliffs, there are homes and trees. The sky is dark and stormy. This painting measures approximately 15 inches by 20 3/4 inches. This would be a great addition to a collection of California fine art. Identification This painting is by George Booth Post (1906-1997), a well-known, listed California artist. Per askART, Post was born in Oakland, California. He moved to San Francisco in 1919. After he graduated from Polytechnic High School, he studied art at the California School of Fine Art from 1924 to 1926. Post first exhibited during the early 1930s, and his works were well-received. He is known for watercolors of the San Francisco Bay area and the Mother Lode country. Post taught at Stanford University (1940), San Jose State College (1951 to 1952), and at the California College of Arts and Crafts (1947 to 1972). He traveled and painted around the world. Post exhibited at Beaux Arts Gallery in San Francisco (1931, solo), San Francisco Art Center (1932 to 1934), San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1936 and 1941 (solos)), California-Pacific International Exposition in San Diego (1935), Art Institute of Chicago (1936), California Watercolor Society (1936 to 1953, prizes), California Palace of the Legion of Honor (1939, 1945, 1960, and 1965 (solos)), Oakland Art Gallery (1936, 1937 (solo), and 1947 (prize)), Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1936 and 1945 (prize)), Laguna Beach Museum (1942 (solo)), Springfield Museum in Missouri (1966), Zellerbach Show in San Francisco (1975 (1st prize)), Challis Gallery in Laguna Beach (1979 (solo)), and Society of Western Artists (1979 (1st prize)). His works are held by museums in California and elsewhere. Post lived in San Francisco until he passed away. Condition This unframed painting looks very good overall. There are no holes, rips, or creases to the paper. Near the right hand edge, there is a small area of tiny dents (of an unknown nature) to the paper (dented from back to front; front side view shown in Photo 4). There are a couple of light scuffs to the upper left corner. There is very minor edge wear. The back side is as shown.
