PLEASE READ SHIPPING DESCRIPTION CAREFULLY BEFORE BUYING! To learn more about us please click on our profile Dr. Grigory N. Goldovsky, chief of department of 18th-19th c. painting of State Russian Museum in St.Petersburg identified (during his visit to our gallery, in February 2010) this small painting as an original work of Russian 19th-century artist Michail Ivanovich Scotti painted by the latter during his Italian period, i.e. between 1838-1844 (see his biography below). Michail Ivanovich Scotti (1814 St. Petersburg - 1861 Paris) was a descendant of a great artist family of Italian origin. His grandfather, Italian painter-decorator Carlo Scotti came in 1786 to St. Petersburg with his family. The latter's son, Giovanni Batista (father of Michail Ivanovich Scotti; in Russia, he took the name "Ivan") also became a well-known decorator in Russia (we have in our collection a very unusual work of his - see our web # 29338). Our Michail Ivanovich, apart from taking lessons from his father, was a private pupil of A.E. Egorov and, in 1830, became a student of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. In 1835, he graduated from the Academy with a rank of "free artist". From 1838 to 1844 he lived with the family of Count Kutaisov in Italy (sic!). In 1845, he obtained a title of an academician (member of the Imperial Academy). From 1849 to 1855 he taught at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (MuZhVZ). In 1855, he became a professor of historical painting. After 1856 Michail Ivanovich Scotti mostly lived abroad. Works of this artist belong to collections of Russia's most esteemed museums: State Russian Museum, Tretyakov Gallery, etc. Our additional images show two "Italian" works of this artist offered in the last years at international auction market. The canvas material looks great up close, and I like how it softens the painting’s overall appearance.
