Mathieu Ignace van Brée (1773 Antwerp - 1839 Antwerp) began his art studies at the age of 10 at the Antwerp Academy. He debuted as exponent in 1793 and in 1794 was appointed academy's "professor-adjoint" and assigned his own class to teach.
