Large Early 19th C. Portrait Phallene Papillon Dog in a Landscape James Barenger

About this work: A wonderful portrait of a Phallene Papillon attributed to renowned British sporting artist James Barenger (1780-1831). Painted on an large scale, this work depicts the cheerful pup in near profile view with its head turned towards the viewer. It stands on three legs with its tail curled into a crescent. The portrait is set against a beautiful landscape with mountains, trees, a river, and a partly cloudy sky. The work is oil on canvas and appears to be unsigned. It is housed in a later gilt frame with two old labels on the reverse of the stretcher. Surface craquelure throughout commensurate with age. Scattered inpainting, primarily along the perimeter of the work and lower foreground. Later frame with wear and losses/flaking to gilding.
