From the Artist Page The Artof Karen Cummings Karen Cummings is an artist whose appreciation for every-day beauty is expressed in her creative work. Karen is inspired byher fascination withthe natural world, no matter what style of painting she employs. She hopes to engage the viewer and share with them the world that surrounds us every day, but easily goes unnoticed in the midst of our hectic lives. As Pablo Picasso said, Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life. Although she has not pursued a formal art education, Karen has had the privilege of learning from accomplished artists in her area. She became serious about her painting after taking a workshop on Monhegan Island with W. Ralph Murray. The spectacular location, a magnet for many famous artists, and Ralphs excellent plein-air instruction sealed Karens determination to paint. There she learned to see the nuances of light and shadow, color and perspective. Since then she has studied with local artists Elizabeth Apgar-Smith and Joan Lord. To keep her work fresh and challenging, Karenalternates between several mediums: oil, watercolor, and pencil. Today, Karen paints from her home in Rexford, NY and teaches privately, for art groups, in public libraries and at after-school development programs. She has displayed her art widely in the area: at theNational Juried Art Exhibitionin Cooperstown, theNature Art Exhibitat the Emma Treadwell Thacher Park Nature Center, the annual juried art show at Clifton Park Library, the Schenectady Stockade Art Show, the William K. Sanford Library Artists Corner, Local.Art.Works in Jonesville, at the Moon and River Caf, the Zion Lutheran gallery, Schenectady Community College and at Art Night in Schenectady. Her paintings have won awards at the Niskayuna Paint-Out, the Jericho Fine Arts show, the Rexford Art Show and in multiple member shows sponsored by Schenectady Art Society. Her original paintings and calligraphy are in private collections all over the country and are on display in the Clarkson University Graduate building, the Saratoga Schenectady Endoscopy Center and First Presbyterian Church of Schenectady. Karens goal in painting is to honor the Creator with appreciation for the world He designed. Painting on location wouldbe her first choice, but she also uses photographs to help complete her landscape, animal portraits and still-life paintings. Although shortcuts are widely available, she does all her drawings by hand and usesclassicpainting techniques.
