DIMENSIONS: 27”H x 50”W Jose Bartoli (1910 - 1995) was active/lived in California / Mexico, Spain. Jose Bartoli is known as a Painting, illustrator, and set designer. Josep Bartolí i Guiu (1910-1995) was a Spanish painter, cartoonist and writer. He fought in the Spanish Civil War, and published a collection of drawings (Campos de Concentracion 1939-1943) from his time as a refugee in a French internment camp. He later travelled extensively, including to Mexico and the United States where he worked as a set designer and artist. In the 1950s he was a member of the 10th Street Group of artists, and in 1973 he won the Mark Rothko prize. His time in France was portrayed in the César Award-winning 2020 film Josep, directed by French cartoonist Aurel. Born in Barcelona in 1910 in a family linked to music and art. Reveler, a playboy character when very young, began working as a draftsman in the press and became involved in the trade unionism of the electrifying Barcelona at the time. In February 1939, near the end of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), he crossed the French border. Over two years, he would pass through seven concentration camps, the latest being that of Bram, from which he escaped. Arrested by the Gestapo, he was sent to Dachau concentration camp, but on the way, he jumped the train and fled, and after a long journey, arrived in Mexico. There, he resumed his painting and came into contact with the environment of Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, who was a lover. He participated in the founding of the gallery Prisse. In the United States, he was the first artist of the journal Hollyday, highlighting some of the more sought-after artists of the time. Also, he was decorated for historical films in Hollywood and was part of the 10th Street group, along with Willem de Kooning, Kline, Pollock, and Rothko. In 1973 was awarded the Arts Mark Rothko. Among the books he illustrated are Caliban (1971), The Black Man in America (1975), and Concentration Camps (Mexico, 1943, Madrid, Spain, 2006 .) The latter title, on texts of Catalan journalist Molins Fabrega, includes an extensive documentary series of pen drawings on their experience in concentration camps. Jose Bartoli died in 1995.
