During World War II, Whitcomb served as a Lieutenant (Junior Grade) in the United States Navy. Born on February 27, 1906, in Weatherford, Oklahoma, he was raised in Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Although he initially studied English at Ohio State University with aspirations of becoming a writer, his extraordinary artistic talent led him to pursue a career in illustration.
