This original watercolor is by Jake Lee (1911-1991). Jake was born in China and grew up in Monterey, California. He studied art at San Jose State College and Otis Art Institute. He became a commercial artist for newspapers and magazines. He later began exhibiting his work through the California Watercolor Society and he. was an art instructor in Southern California. Many of his paintings documented the Chinese immigration to the U.S. The Chinese Historical Society of America acquired through an auction many special large watercolors from a series that he did. Jake also became friends with a Carmel Art Association artist named Joseph Nordmann (see www.Joseph nordmann.com) and they exchanged paintings. When Joseph died in 2015, I acquired many paintings and artifacts from the Nordmann estate including 5 Jake Lee paintings (see other EBAY listings) that Jake had given to Joseph, some with notes to Joseph (or Joe). The provenance for this painting goes from Jake to Joseph Nordmann to me. This small Jake Lee painting is special and has been professionally framed in a matted frame. See “Seller’s other items”.
