Hayley Lever was born in Australia and is noted for his realism mixed with impressionism. He studied art in London and in France. He painted a vast array of subjects from marine views to landscapes and town views. He experimented with many mediums: oil, watercolors, gouache, ink, and crayon. Later in his career he settled in New York and painted scenes along the New England coast and Upstate New York. His output was prolific and his works can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Phillips’s Collection and The Corcoran Museum. This work is a gouache and ink on paper which has been dry mounted. It conveys a striking palette of colors, lavender, yellow and greens. There is an annotation under the left corner which states: “La Porte St. Louis”. The artist’s signature can be found on the lower right corner. The work measures 8” by 6” to sight and 15” by 12” in the gilt, beaded frame. The paper and paint surface are in excellent condition.
