Rare George Petty Original Illustration Art Painting Hockey Player. —-The first photo shows the artwork in its original frame under glass and the rest of the photos show the conservation work I had done by a professional by mounting it together with the program with acid free backing. The frame shop recommended I remove it from the original frame because of the cardboard backing was not acid free and eventually would cause damage to the artwork. It’s an original Mixed media Painting - pencil, ink, gouache. The artist board has toned to a brownish color however the whites and blacks of the actual painting are super crisp and colorful. Petty is known for his pinup Artwork and the only male figures I could find that he had drawn were ads for a swimsuit company (Jantzen) in the 1930s and 40s and some for Esquire magazine. The original frame was falling apart a bit and was basic so I had it professionally gallery mounted on acid free backing and framed under UV protected plexiglass and displayed with the program. It measures approximately 28 x 19“ Framed, and the Artist’s board it is painted on measures 13 x 13 inches. The magazine measures approximately 7 1/2“ x 10 1/2“. It’s difficult to determine the value of the piece because I could not find another one like it but some of his pin ups have sold for upwards of $50,000. There is a bit of a glare from the plexiglass but I assure you it looks better in person. A fellow Ebayer was nice enough to share some information on where the artwork was published and it turns out it was on a 1933/34 cover for the Stanley cup winning Chicago Blackhawks. It appears the image was used throughout the season as I was able to find a couple other examples of the program from different games during the season. Thanks for your interest.
