French Surrealist Artist Andre Breton Estate Painting. Signed Illegibly. C1900

For sale is an original oil on canvas painting from the estate of the renowned French surrealist artist Andre Breton (1896 - 1966) The painting with the estate sale label from the Andre Breton Estate sale. The sale was conducted by CalmelsCohen at the Hôtel Drouot-Richelieu of the items in the artists estate 42 Rue Fontaine, Paris France in April of 2003. We don't know anything about this particular painting, other than it was in his collection as noted with the estate auction label when he passed away. What we do know about the artist is that in addition to the artworks he bought, notably primitive sculptures from Oceania, hundreds of paintings, drawings, photographs and books that were given to him by friends, followers and little-known artists seeking his blessing, much of the paintings were of up and coming artists, many, who have gone onto worldwide, success, and many who were regional artists seeking worldwide success. This painting is oil on canvas and dates to probably around the turn of the century give or take 10 or 20 years or so. This painting features a portrait of a woman with a wonderful derrière who teasingly lifts up her dress to reveal her garter belts as she looks directly back at the viewer. She holds an impossibly large mysterious box in her left hand while her seemingly disproportionately small right hand lifts up her dress to expose her undergarments to the viewer. Her gaze is steadfast and directly at the viewer. The painting is signed with a name and signature that we cannot discern The stretch of bars seem oxidated to perhaps around the turn of the century or maybe earlier. We believe this painting fits in spectacularly to Andre Breton's surrealistic taste and it is not surprising that it was a valued part of his collection.
