He was a son and pupil of well-known Frankfurt landscapist Christian Georg I Schütz (1718-1791). From 1777 onwards, Schuetz lived in the house of his Swiss sponsor, Basel manufacturer Johann Rudolf Burckhardt, whom he in 1778 accompanied on his long journey through Switzerland and Upper Italy (our watercolor, signed by the artist "F-co (Francesco)" instead of German "Franz", was surely made on this trip).
