Miniature painting of a high, snowy alpine mountain, possibly the Jungfrau in Switzerland, a classic mountain house at lower right, unsigned, the work in the style of painter Hubert Sattler (1817-1904). The gouache on board measures 3 1/4" by 4 1/2" (8 1/4" by 9 1/2" in original old gilded oak framing with beads). The painting is in excellent condition, having been protected over time by glass; the frame's beading is missing at top and the portion of the beading at left is loose and easily lost. Sattler painted prolifically in Europe and the Holy Land, sometimes using pseudonyms. No doubt, he also gave rise to copyists eager to cash in on the early tourist trade.

A nice touch is the subtle brushwork that gives the painting a realistic yet dreamy quality on the wall.
