Carl Franz Emil (in Prague - Karel František Emil) Boerner was born in 1812 in Hubertusburg, Saxony, as a son of a pottery manufacturer. In 1827-32 he attended the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, which he left due to illness without graduation.
