To learn more about us please click on our profile This gouache is a typical work of Parisian miniaturist, active in 2nd half of the 18th century, Claude-Edme-Charles de Lioux de Savignac (see our comparison images and the images that provide his extensive biography). Coming from a dynasty of fan painters, Claude-Edmé-Charles de Lioux de Savignac worked at the Sèvres factory from May 1752 to August 1753, then from April 1758 to March 1760, where he specialized in landscape painting on porcelain. On this date, he moved to Paris. He sympathized with Joseph Vernet and asked, in a letter addressed to the Marquis de Marigny on July 3, 1766, the authorization to copy in miniature the paintings of Vernet belonging to the King, which he obtained thanks to the support of Charles-Nicolas Cochin and Jacques II Bailly. He was also close to Louis-Nicolas van Blarenberghe and was possibly his pupil. Both made miniatures for the lids of gold boxes, of which Savignac was distinguished by a different color range. Their art has been characterized by art critic Sir Sacheverell Sitwell as an "antlike industry."
