Carlo Cignani(Bologna, 15 May 1628 – Forlì, 6 September 1719) Sleeping Shepherdess with two Cupids / Pastorella addormentata con due amorini ca. 1670(Although in the catalog of the Las Vegas exhibition it is dated to the early years of the 18th century) Oil on canvas - 36 cm. x 44cm. The painting was exhibited in Las Vegas in 1963 at the exhibition on European masterpieces, as can be seen from the label placed on the reverse of the canvas. The particular rendering of contrasts between lights and shadows bring out the magnificent embodiments of the characters and the cold colors, typical of the artist, in great prominence. Due to the choice of composition, style and that of the subject treated, the composition could date back to the 70s of the 17th century, given the consonance with the work of the "Shepherd and Shepherdess" exhibited at the Hermitage and dated precisely 1660. The pyramidal arrangement here re-proposed it often returns in the works of the Bolognese painter and the depiction of putti is also similar. Relined probably during the 1960sThe work is embellished with a palmette frame (not coeval).Old retouched areas visible under U.V. light. PROVENANCE:Probably ex Mrs. John Harritz collection, Limehouse, London (ante 1810); Probably with Christie's, London, A catalogue of a valuable and pleasing collection of chiefly high-finished Flemish and Dutch pictures, the property of Mrs. Harritz, of Limehouse, deceased ..., June 16th 1810, lot 59 (titled A shepherdess with children); Probably ex Philip Hill (c.1766–1836) collection, [picture?] dealer of Greek Street, Soho, London, 1810 (bought from the above sale for 3.3 pounds); Ex swiss private collection, Bern, 1963 (see Las Vegas exhibition catalogue); Ex italian private collection, Rome;Auction house, Rome.
