His father was the shoemaker Joseph Jutz, his mother was Ottilia (born Zettwoch, † 1848). He was the fourth of nine children. While his father emigrated to the USA with his son Pirmin in 1853, Carl remained in Beuern and his sisters Adelheid, Theresia, and Cecilia were housed with relatives in a windbreak until 1855.
