It measures about 3”x5” and is hand-signed “Axel” dated 1969. Likely painted at the Cosmic Butterfly (Albany, Schenectady, NY). It has a particularly energetic style and is in excellent age appropriate condition. With minor color discoloration as can be expected with a painting Half-A-Century-Old. Artist Axel Stocks (1948-2015) created art in his own unique Surreal-Biomorphic style with mentors such as Salvador Dali and H.R. Geiger. His Axelizations included: acrylic paintings, sculptures, blood paintings, textile designs, with an interest in a multitude of curiosities. The butterfly is a motif often seen in Axel’s work. The butterfly symbolizes metamorphosis (change), Freedom. Escape and the out-stretched wings are a Christ-like reference. Axel lived and created his art in Lodi, NJ; Albany, New York (Cosmic Butterfly Shop); Woodstock, NY (Cosmic Butterfly Shop); and New York City. I first met and worked with him in his Albany/Schenectady days at the Cosmic Butterfly and continued my relationship with him in his Woodstock and early NYC days. He has a colorful reputation which is reflected in his imaginative works of art. Several of this series of paintings where created by loading a paintbrush with several colors at one time ....applying them to the surface, and then using paint straight out of the tube to for added texture. This original acrylic painting is hand-painted on an index card. It measures about 3½”x5” and is hand-signed “Axel” dated 1969.
