A charming, small (12 1/2" by 9 1/2" framed) oil on panel, the scene a peaceful vision of small foreground figure in suspenders and hat with fishing pole, a rowboat nearby, and a church and wooden structure across the small lake in middle distance, all framed by feathery trees. It is not signed on the front but on reverse in pencil in old hand is written "The Mill Dam/ S. Gibson". Likely New England or certainly the northeastern states. A great little work. Circa 1870. SCH

A nice touch is the subtle brushwork that gives the painting a realistic yet dreamy quality on the wall.
