Original Oil painting portrait on wood panel, depicting Elizabeth Bathory (1560-1614) a countess who lived in Transylvania, then a part of the Kingdom of Hungary. She was from a very important family that included kings, cardinals, knights, and judges. Her family ruled Transylvania as an independent region within the Hungarian kingdom. Painting measures 14.75“ x 11“ x 3/4“. On oak wood board. Painting is unsigned and undated. On the back is written: “ when we first joined, on me you bled, and from that day, we were wed. Aug.” This painting is after another copy of the lost 1585 original portrait of Elizabeth Báthory. While the wood is perhaps 19th century, the painting is probably 20th century.
