Antique French Landscape Painting by Charles Rey-de-Sarlat (1819- )

This painting is an oil on panel depiction of a seaside village, most likely Italian. The inscription refers to Sescine or perhaps Cecina on the Tuscan Coast. The painting features a view of the old harbor in the distance and the fortress on the hill. The saturated, sun-drenched colors plus the figures moving about convey the impression of the place.The artist was born in Paris in 1819 and painted mostly architectural views and landscapes. Rey-de-Sarlat studied under Justin Ouvrie ’and featured at the Paris Salon from 1849-1870.The panel measures 8” (20cm) by 12 ½” (32 cm) to sight and 10” (25.5cm) by 15” (38cm) in the giltwood, period frame. The paint surface shows some minor abrasions but overall, in a very good and stable condition. The frame shows abrasions to the outer margin and a loss to the inner liner, lower left.The artist signed and dated the painting on the lower right corner “Ch. Rey 1868.”
