To learn more about us please click on our profile The German inscription "Nicht abgeholtes Porträt" ("unclaimed portrait"), found on verso of this miniature, was surely written by the artist themselves - either the customer refused to pay for it or they didn't appear at all once the portrait was finished. Due to its octagonal form, typical for Russian miniatures of the early 19th century, we believe this portrait was executed by a German miniaturist working in Russia in the 1830s. As first in question would be here Prussian-born artist working from 1807 to 1842 in Russia, Andrzej Jozef (Andreas Josef) Hintz (for comparison see our web # 43968) Andrzej Jozef Hintz (in Poland and Lithuania - Andrzej (Jedrzej) Jozef; in Russia - Andrei Iosif) was born in the 1790s into a German family living in East Prussia (today this territory belongs to Russia). Until the end of his days he remained a Prussian subject. He began his art studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Koenigsberg and in 1807 came to Wilna (then Russian Empire, now Vilnius, Lithuania) where he became pupil of miniaturist Jan Rustem at the Wilna University. He studied under Rustem until 1812, when he came to Warsaw, where he stayed for several years. In 1815 he was in Krakow, where he had an exhibition of his works in portrait miniatures. In 1820 and from 1835 to 1837 we meet him again in Wilna, where he is mentioned as "passing from St. Petersburg and Moscow" - a clear evidence of his permanent stay in Russia. The last time he is mentioned is in 1842 in Wilna. He signed Hintz or Hintze. Works of his are to see in various Russian museum collections.
