Titled “Marine Industry”, this excellent work depicts a factory at the water’s edge. The buildings are surrounded by water and small bits of land with reeds. A dramatic yellow sky rounds out the composition. The work is watercolor on paper and is signed in the lower right. It is housed in an excellent frame behind glazing. The work retains a label on the reverse from premier American art dealer D. Wigmore Fine Art in NYC. Provenance: D. Wigmore Fine Art, NY; Private collection, NY; Acquired from the above Size: 19 inches tall by 25 inches wide (painting) 25 inches tall by 31 inches wide by 2 inches deep (frame) About the artist: Gerald Collins Gleeson (1915-1986) was an American artist primarily known for his exquisite watercolor paintings. Born in Providence, RI, Gleeson studied at the Rhode Island School of Design in the 1930s. After serving in WW2 he studied with Jerry Farnsworth in Turo, MA. Afterwards, he spent went abroad and studied for a year at Mexico City College. He then returned to the US, settling in Berkeley, CA and studying at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland. Typically, his watercolors depict street and harbor scenes with buildings and nature. While painting and exhibiting regularly in the San Francisco bay area, he also gave painting and drawing classes. Gleeson was a member of the Allied Artists of America. Examples of his work can be found in numerous institutions, including the Oakland Museum, San Diego Museum, Attleboro Arts Museum, RISD Museum, Salgamundi Club, and Tampa Museum. Condition: Very good overall condition. Minor marks/rippling to surface. Some scattered losses and general wear to frame. It is ready to be displayed and enjoyed!
