1917 Georges Braque WW1 Papier Colle Scherenschnitte Cubism Collage Original

This is an auction for an original WW1 Papier Colle Collage work of Cubism art dating from c1916-1917. On the back there is penciled a name, which starts with a cursive "B" and ends in "e", but the rest of the name cannot be deciphered. Some forensics will be needed to make this name visible. Georges Braque was instrumental during this era of creating the genre of Cubism and some of his works were entirely Papier Colle. This work was created at the time of World War 1 and appears to have a patriotic American theme featuring Dough Boys, the Calvary, American flag bunting, swans, hearts, angels blowing trumpets, doves of Peace, soldiers raising their hats and flags, a gold cross, flowers, etc. The entire dramatic scene is surrounded by the raising of the red curtain, as if the show is about to begin. A couple of the cutouts have moved, most notably the red sunset, which was behind the Large Gold Cross, has shifted to the left, and as you can see from the fading of this red sunset, the impression of the cross is still visible, proving it was centrally located. Also, the red heart at the bottom seems to have been originally centered within the black heart. The green cutout behind the red sunset probably has shifted also and is associated with the location of the red sunset in some fashion. The work still has the original backing, frame and glass. The works stands 41" high and 28" wide, including frame. The works is generally in excellent condition, considering the medium and the age of 107 years. Whether this is a work by Georges Braque is hard to say, but he did fight in WW1 starting in 1914 (for France), so the odds are against him creating this work, but someone closely associated with Picasso and Braque definitely created this work. The gold wood and gesso frame is in decent condition, but has some issues along the bottom edge. Please ignore the stray light reflections seen on the glass. Email with any questions or answers.
