ARTIST: Jack Carington Smith (1908-1972) Australian TITLE:"Dusk on The Derwent Tasmania" (1954) SIGNED: lower left MEDIUM: oil on canvas SIZE:78 x 64cm inclusive frame CONDITION: used DETAIL: Born simply "Smith" in Tasmania he adopted "Carington Smith" as his surname around 1936 when he won a travelling scholarship which enabled him to study at the Royal Academy Of Arts London. Returning to Australia became head of the art department at Hobart from 1940 to 1970. He won the Sulman Prize in 1949 for Bush Pastoral, a Mural design for New State Building, Hobart, and the Archibald Prize and the Rubinstein Prize 1966. The Carington Smith Library in the Centre for the Arts University of Tasmania is named after him. He was one of Tasmania's most important painters.
