“Boats on the River Flats” Original watercolour from the artist’s estate. An original watercolour on paper River Flats by John Flexmore who somehow neglected to sign and date it, but it is from the 1980s. A scene of boats on the river’s edge, left stranded when the tide has gone out, one attended to by a young man. John Flexmore, (1911 - 2004) was a well-known Melbourne artist, a watercolour specialist, mainly of representational landscapes. He studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne from 1930-37 under Bernard Hall, Charles Wheeler and W.B. McInnes. After war service he painted mostly watercolour landscapes, but he also painted several oil portraits under commission. In his early days, made a considerable number of linotype prints. He held biennial one-man shows at the Athenaeum Gallery, Melbourne until 1970. Flexmore’s works are very easy to live with, being very restful.
