Oil painting on canvas of a man wearing glasses, dating to the 1930s. Believed to depict a self portrait of artist Jean Frédéric Schweckler, based on another known work. The painting is unsigned and demonstrates a strong use of color. Unframed Jean Frédéric Schweckler (1888 to 1962) was born in Geneva, Switzerland, to a French family of Alsatian descent. He married Ida Vurpillot in 1917, and their daughter, Jeannette, was born in 1919. During the 1920s, he emigrated to the United States, settling in Locust Valley, New York, and became a U.S. citizen in the 1940s. A thoughtful and introspective portrait, this work brings quiet character and timeless presence to any home or collection.
